The Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) scheme is envisioned to enable affordable internet access through 50 million Wi-Fi hotspots by 2030. However, the scheme, launched in 2020, could not meet the first milestone of adding 10 million hotspots by 2022. It had a muted impact on broadband proliferation, mainly due to resistance from telcos and internet service providers (ISPs).
